In the final major WordPress release of 2024, WordPress 6.7 released to the public on Tuesday, November 12. What’s new in WordPress 6.7? We highlight the major changes here.
New Twenty Twenty-Five Theme
One a year, WordPress releases a new default theme, and WordPress 6.7 includes the next itineration, Twenty Twenty-Five. WordPress describes the theme as follows:
Twenty Twenty-Five offers a flexible, design-focused theme that lets you build stunning sites with ease. Tailor your aesthetic with an array of style options, block patterns, and color palettes. Pared down to the essentials, this is a theme that can truly grow with you.
The theme includes numerous pre-designed block patterns and style variations to make it easy for users to select a template and create a site quickly and easily.
Zoom Out view
WordPress 6.7 also includes a new “Zoom Out” button at the top of the editor to allow you to zoom out and see how the sections of your content line up. You can rearrange sections of content, add/edit/remove patterns, and make other big-picture changes.
HEIC image conversion
iPhone users, rejoice! (And some Android users, too.) Beginning in WordPress 6.7, WordPress will automatically convert Apple’s HEIC image format — the default for any photo taken with an iPhone and some newer Androids — to JPEG format when a HEIC image is uploaded to the Media library. This means you don’t have to convert the image to another file type first. If you’ve been frustrated because this file format was incompatible with WordPress, just be sure your site’s host supports Imagick and you’ll be good to go. Go to Tools → Site Health in your WordPress Dashboard, click the Info tab, open the Media Handling tab, and you’ll see info about your site’s Imagick installation there. Once you upgrade to WordPress 6.7, you should see HEIC listed under ImageMagick supported media formats.
New font presets
New style selection options in WordPress 6.7 allow you to create font size presets, override theme defaults, and create your own custom sizes. Fluid typography allows text to scale responsively when you change font sizes.
Other new features
WordPress 6.7 also includes the following:
- Several performance updates, including faster pattern loading
- Numerous accessibility fixes and enhancements, including clearer labeling and accessible headings on WordPress login screens
- Dragging and dropping multiple images onto an Image block will automatically convert it to a Gallery block
- Improved PHP support
- Connect custom fields to blocks, allowing you to create dynamic content
WordPress 6.7 is now available, so update your site and see what you think of the new features and changes!
